Sound: Avenged Sevenfold have really taken a leap with their new CD, City Of Evil. No longer the screaming metal band of their earlier CD's (due no doubt to the singer, M. Shadows, having to have vocal chord surgery), Avenged have stepped up to the major label debut category, and have delivered a cd every guitarists should own. Very much inspired by '80s shred guitar, Sinister Gates and Zacky Vengeance have crafted some very intricate guitar parts to compliment Shadow's voice. Duel guitar work, sweeping arpeggiated chords, acoustic/spanish guitar breakdowns, and screaming leads can all happen on one song. Sevenfold break the typical songwriting model, by not having any particular part be designated a 'solo'. Instead, both guitarists play lead lines throughout the song, often times weaving around the melody, and chasing each other in a very snake-like manner. I would say the only drawback to this, is that it can get a little tiring after a while. Although, not enough to where I wanted to stop the CD. Mostly because when it does get to that point, it changes to an entirely different direction. Every song is like a story that takes many different shapes throughout. With heavy parts breaking down into slow, acoustic parts, which then go into a faster heavier part, before shifting to an orchestral part which resembles danny elfman. Avenged Sevenfold show that they aren't easily categorized. Lyrics: M. Shadow's has always been very visual in his lyrics, and City Of Evil is no different. There are many different themes on this CD, from Dimebag's death, to the war in Iraq. The lyics fit every song very well, and I think the inabilty of Shadow's to scream the way he used to only helped City of Evil. Many of his lyrics on previous CD's would get lost in the music and the delivery, but there is now a much more clear vocal style. Very reminiscent to Scott Weiland on Velvet Revolver's self-titled. Shadow's may not have the versatility of before, but he pulls off every song very well. // 8 Impression: It's very hard to compare City Of Evil with any other band out at the moment. Avenged Sevenfold has transcended easy categorization, and delivered a CD that should rank very high on the modern guitarists list. It's nice to see some shred guitar work happening in a tasteful manner, and not being played over screaming. This should gain more exposure for the band, as ths cd is more accesible to the non-metal community. This cd is what a lot of fans of the '80s shred guitar playing have been waiting for, and it doesn't sound cheesy in any way. Avenged Sevenfold have taken the first defining steps in their career to become a serious contender in the music ranks. A modern sound with an old school twist, this CD is sure to become a classic CD of the new generation.

Waking The Fallen Review Sound: I first heard the song "Unholy Confessions" from a friend and I knew right away I had to have this CD. The two guitarist are really really good I couldnt belive I hadnt heard of them before because they were so good, very diffrent style then most music out today, and the drummer just goes crazy on the set. This album made me think of a new age young Metallica. and yess the name does have to do with the bible but dont let that mislead you they are not a christian band (for thoose who dont know the name came from god telling cain that he would be avenged seven times for the murder of his brother). // 10 Lyrics: The lyrics are amazing, a lot different from most I've heard in a long time. The lyrics arent straight forward, you can tell that there is some kind of hidden message for you to interperate. M Shadows has such an amazing voice imo, he does it all, the screaming, the soft, that crunch, all the voices he does perfectly. The music wouldn't fit any better with anyone else beside Shadows, I have to say this is one of the most talented bands to come out in a long ass time and they were needed desperately. Impression: This is my personal favorite cd of all avenged sevenfolds CDs. I think this album is better then any other album to come out in its genre in the past two years. My favorite song is "Chapter Four" a bad ass scream filled song about Cain and Abel (I think thats how you spell it) that is just wow. There is absolutely nothing I hate about this album, I love every single thing about it from the artwork to the CD, to the case, I just love it all. If it were stolen I would track down the person who took it and I would slit their throat and take it back.go on metal and heavy metal music

Sounding The Seventh Trumpet Review Sound: This is Avenged Sevenfold's first album and is metal/heavy metal to the max. You'll be ready to bang your head after hearing the opening track, To End The Rapture, with a bad ass solo but is the only one on the album. This is an album that has the sound of bands like Atreus's and As I Lay Dying and not to mention M. Shadows screams his head out on this album. Breaking Their Hold is the fastest and most in your face song on the album and is only a minute and a half long. Of course the guitar work doesn't compare to City Of Evil but synester and Zacky get the job done. The Rev also does some nice drum work and plays way too fast which sounds awesome. Lyrics: Most of the lyrics on this album are about death and other dark things but most of the time you can't understand a word M. Shadows screams out. One song lyrically stands out which is Shattered by Broken Dreams which talks about getting your girl to stop drinking and get her life back together. There's also a ballad on this album Warmness On The Soul and is as emo as it can get the song is mostly Shadows singing and played by piano until a small solo comes in towards the end. The song after it, An Epic Wasted Of Time, is about having a bad break up and realizing in the end she was a waste of f--ing time! They also pull the old school punk sound off on Streets which I hear is a cover song. Impression: This album is an awesome one that'll have you headbanging for hours. The best tracks on it are To End The Rapture, Turn The Other Way, Darkness Surrounding, Lips Of Deceit, An Epic Waste Of Time, Breaking Their Hold, and Shattered By Broken Dreams with acoustics in the beginning and turning into another metal/heavy metal song. If you can try to look for the demo version of this album, which is when they were with Goodlife records before being picked up by Hopeless. M. Shaddow's voice sounds like a dog barking but the demo version of Lips Of Deceit still rocks. If I had it stolen I'd buy it again. metal forever
